Abstract
windIO is a common schema definition of wind turbines and wind farms that helps standardize the representation of information that flows across multi-disciplinary design, analysis and optimization (MDAO) workflows for wind turbine and plant design, operation, and control. The development of windIO was initiated in 2017 within the International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP) Task 37 on Wind Energy Systems Engineering and Integrated Research, Design and Development. windIO v1.0 was first publicly presented at the 2021 Wind Energy Science Conference and was later documented in an IEA Wind technical report [1]. Today, windIO is hosted at https://github.com/IEAWindSystems/windIO and its development is conducted within the ongoing IEA Wind TCP Task 55 on Reference Wind Turbines and Plants (REFWIND). windIO is adopted by popular MDAO tools such as WISDEM and WEIS [2], which are developed and released by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, AESOpt and pyWake [3], which are developed and released by the Technical University of Denmark, pyNuMAD [4], which is developed and released by Sandia National Laboratories, as well as wind turbine simulation and design tools at DNV and at ORE Catapult in the UK. This abstract presents the latest major release of windIO, tagged v2.0.
