    Abstract

The present report is a best practice guide for application of results from the Wind Atlas for South Africa (WASA). A general description of the methodological framework – the wind atlas methodology – is given, including validation results of the numerical wind atlas at 10 measurement sites. The atlas can be applied for different purposes – from siting of wind turbines to planning of wind farms – and the requirements and considerations for this are outlined. Furthermore, a number of case studies are described, which illustrate different applications and may serve as a guideline and inspiration for new wind energy projects. The report also contains detailed instructions for accessing and using the WASA data.
