    Abstract

Some of the existing definitions of the term ‘gel’ are discussed and shortcomings are identified. A purely phenomenological definition is proposed: a gel is a soft, solid or solid‐like material consisting of two or more components one of which is a liquid, present in substantial quantity. ‘Solid‐like gels’ are further defined in terms of the dynamic mechanical properties.
