    Abstract

VirtuelGalathea3 yearly report for 2009 contains an update of results in the project during 2009. VirtuelGalathea3 (vg3.dk) is a project providing research-based educational material to upper secondary schools using input from the Galathea 3 expedition. The Galathea expedition took place from 11th August 2006 to 25th April 2007 (8 months). The ship ‘Vædderen’ sailed from Copenhagen and around the globe. Most of the 50 scientific projects took place on board, however several projects took place on land in various countries. In VirtuelGalathea3 the scientists from Galathea cooperate with skilled teachers in order to provide educational material across several disciplines with focus on the physical sciences. The homepage vg3.dk contains material which includes 23 new projects from VirtuelGalathea3 developed in 2009 plus 23 projects developed in 2007-2008, and 40 developed in the Satellite Eye project in 2006-2008. The aim is to have around 100 educational projects online. There are also near-real-time satellite images of several parameters and a large satellite images database archive from August 2006 to present day – updated every day!. Furthermore many short videos and photos from the expedition are shown. The web-page was officially opened in October 2008 by the minister of education Bertel Haarder. As of 21st January 2010 over 42.000 unique users have visited the web page with an average time of 3 minutes on the site. There is an average of 1.500 users per week in the school year 2009/2010. From the typical weekly cycle with maximum number of visits during working days and minimum on Saturdays and during school holidays, the homepage obviously is used mainly in schools. Marketing effects are through electronic media, educational training courses and seminars for teachers and participation with information stands at Uddannelsesforum 2009 and Skolebogmesse 2010.
