    Abstract

The ablation of a deuterium pellet under prevailing tokamak discharge conditions is shown to be a dynamic phase transition process. An alternative boundary condition at the pellet surface is formulated. Computational results based on the new boundary condition showed that the state of the ablatant in the subsonic region depends on the boundary condition used but is hardly affected in the supersonic region. The scaling law of the pellet ablation rate, therefore, is insensitive to the boundary condition imposed.
