Abstract
Anaerobic digestion plays a major role in circular bioeconomy. Despite its significance, processchallenges impede the widespread application of these systems. The addition of biochar, a low-value biobased carbonous material, has emerged as a promising solution to enhance thebiogas production process. This study delves into the precise role and mechanisms behindbiochar addition in the anaerobic digestion process, exploring different biochar types using amodel substrate. Experimental results suggest that biochar has a neutral impact on the process, however harmful compounds in its structure can cause process inhibition.
