Abstract

The potential of real-time control of combined sewage flows within the catchment areas of the Bottrop and Emschermuendung wastewater treatment plants was studied. After the separation of wastewater flows from the surface waters, approx. 130 facilities for combined sewage treatment, two treatment plants, and numerous pumping stations will be operated in these catchments. With a length of approx. 55 km, the Emscher sewer is a key element of this system. 29 combined sewage treatment facilities were selected for integration into a real-time control concept. These facilities significantly influence the inflow into the Emscher sewer and thus the flow to the treatment plants and the main pumping stations. The average overflow discharge load in the area under review can be reduced by 11 % in compliance with water pollution control requirements. In some of the catchments, reduction rates of 30 % can be achieved in comparison to an uncontrolled system. Besides ecological improvements, real-time shared control systems also offer the possibility to optimize the operations of the drainage system.
