Abstract
This report examines the historical events surrounding the
introduction of telegraph technology in China by the Danish Great
Northern Telegraph Company. It describes the influence of Great
Northern on diplomatic relations between Denmark and China during
the decades of the 1870s and 1880s, and the contributions in terms
of the establishment of telegraph schools and development of a
Chinese telegraph code that this company made as part of the
technology transfer process.
