Abstract

This work was motivated by mapping the energy consumption of road networks towards development of energy efficiency labeling – similar to what is done in consumer sectors. Specifically, the paper presents vehicle traction energy data from the LiRA project, focusing on the usability of it by looking at the effects of longitudinal slope, vehicle speed, and vehicle acceleration. Based on the results, it is shown that it is possible to extract traction energy from the LiRA database and also to normalize the measurements for slope and acceleration. The energy consumption remaining after normalization holds information associated with vehicle speed, wind conditions, vehicle-related inefficiencies, and lastly – the physical state/condition of the infrastructure. Isolation of the latter component will be the topic of further investigations aiming at developing a system for road energy labeling.
