Abstract
The rise of sustainability as a corporate concern has led to increased impetus to develop new products with sustainability as a consideration. The business capabilities needed for repeated success at this are not yet clear. This study captures product sustainability considerations from the literature and uses this as the basis for case studies with industry. Results from this exploratory work suggest that capabilities needed include life cycle thinking, goal setting, use of appropriate tools, board involvement, integration of sustainable design practice, pervasiveness and awareness of external factors. Factors affecting the handling of sustainability in new product development included the type of product being produced and the motivation behind sustainability related activity. In addition, new products must still contribute to the financial viability of the company, and any consideration of sustainability must reflect this. Further case study work to enrich the list of capabilities is suggested.
