Abstract
The method of topology optimization is a versatile method to determine optimal material layouts in
mechanical structures. The method relies on, in principle, unlimited design freedom that can be used
to design materials, structures and devices with significantly improved performance and sometimes
novel functionality. This paper addresses basic issues in simulation and topology design of vibration
and wave propagation problems. Steady-state and transient wave propagation problems are
addressed and application examples for both cases are presented.
