N2 - Stochastic records in geophysics are seldom perfect. They are often too short, noisy, trendy and recorded under less than ideal conditions. I will try to present some of the considerations I have been involved in concerning tapering, trend removal by linear detrending and high-pass filtering, signal noise from counting statistics and finite signal resolution, and two problems concerning scalar flux measurements by means of eddy correlation, namely out-of-phase corruption and covariance loss due to sensor separation.
