Abstract
The need for lighting in the urban environment in the dark hours is fundamental in the modern world. For lamp units for decorative purpose and guide lights the price of the power consumption during the lifetime of the product is nearly negligible compared to the cost of establishment and maintenance. Such markets are interesting for solar energy powered LED applications since the additional price due to the PV and LEDs are hugely offset by the savings of avoiding digging up and repaving the road when laying a cable to the grid and avoid the investment and man-power cost of replacing light bulbs. However, the potential for exploitation of PV LED lighting in the urban environment is much greater and some of the major obstacles for exploiting this potential are due to the facts listed below:
- The irradiance on the solar cells is quite low compared to a rooftop installation.
- The irradiance is unpredictable due to buildings, vegetation, smog and other shadowing factors.
- Very few high quality high-end PV LED products are available for this marked
- For applications far from the Equator the amount of dark hours to daylight hours is in a large mismatch especially in the winter.
The poster describes a project aimed at developing an intelligent solar powered LED light platform for exploiting the energy from the sun in an urban environmental PV integrated lamp installation in an intelligent, efficient and esthetical way.
