Abstract

200 years ago – in 1820 – Hans Christian Ørsted discovered that an electric current running in a wire across a compass could affect the magnetic needle. In doing so, he found a connection between electricity and magnetism, which was named electromagnetism, and it opened new fields in physics and technology. Here, part of the history of electromagnetism is reviewed.
