Abstract

In the recent paper by Ogawa et al. (1), the pumping action of the spherical choanocyte chamber (CC) of a demosponge is modeled by only beating flagella extending from the inner wall of the chamber radially toward its center. This modeling is not in agreement with our present knowledge of choanocytes being the basic pump unit (2–7) and that choanocytes lining the inner wall of a chamber all act as pumps in parallel, each delivering the full pressure of the chamber (2–4).
