Abstract
This work investigates the operational value of hybridizing wind, solar PV, and hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) in isolated, gas-dominated power systems. By co-locating wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, high-energy (HE) and high-power (HP) batteries behind a single grid connection point, Hybrid Power Plants (HPPs) can exploit over-planting and contribute to reserve requirements. A rolling unit commitment framework is developed to compare HPPs with single Wind/PV technologies. The results demonstrate significant improvements in gas turbine operational efficiency, residual load reduction, and spinning reserve reallocation. Sensitivity analyses identify the key HPP design parameters governing these operational benefits, providing actionable insights for system operators and HPP developers in isolated grids.
