Abstract
Most work on design for manufacture (DFM) concentrates on the analysis part of the design work, but support of synthesis activities has much less attention. Particularly the early selection of processes and materials needs further research. The paper will describe a systematic method for selection of manufacturing processes and materials as well as the Designers Manufacturing Inspirator - a computer based tool that inspires the designer to examine materials/processes unknown to him or her. An important research question is here the information modelling based on empirical investigations.
