    Abstract

The chemistry of neptunium, including redox properties, complex chemistry and chemistry of neptunium in its five oxidation states, III, IV, V, VI and VII has been reviewed with special emphasis on factors, which may be of importance in controlling the environmental behavior of this element. Under environmental conditions neptunium should exist predominantly in oxidation state V in the form NpO/ and to some extent also as Np(IV) in the form of Np4+ and Np(VI) in
the form of NpO22+, whereas the other oxidation states Np(III) and Np(VII) can not exist in the environment. However, experimental evidence is lacking as is any knowledge about the mobility of neptunium in the environment.
