Abstract
When discussing manufacturing engineering education you always end
up discussing curricula development, course design, specific
topics to be taught, etc. Very rarely it is discussed, how a
manufacturing engineering department ought to be designed to
create an attractive environment for students, researchers, and
industrial collaboration/consultancy.In this paper an internal
development project called "The Department of the Future" is
described. Based on the needs and expectations of the customers
(students, research funding organisations and industry) a vision
of the department has been formulated and the requirements to the
products/services identified. The organisation necessary to
develop the department is outlined as well as the process to
implement the vision.
