Abstract
Planar LDPE and XLPE samples were conditioned by holding in short
circuit for 48 hrs. at 40oC under rotary pump pressure, and space
charge accumulation in these samples under DC fields of 20 kV/mm
was then compared with the corresponding accumulation in
unconditioned samples. The test results were obtained by utilizing
two different test methods. These were the laser induced pressure
pulse (LIPP) method and the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method.
The thickness of the test samples was 1.80mm. Calibration of the
measuring systems was performed at field strengths below that
required for charge injection from the electrodes. The two test
methods have given comparable test results. It has been found that
the conditioning did not appear to make any consistent difference
to the space charge distribution patterns or densities.
