Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive analysis of the human element as a factor in marine accidents. This analysis has been part of project SAFECO (for Safety of Shipping in Coastal Waters), sponsored by the European Commission, Directorate General for Transport (DGVII). The analysis investigates relationships between the various probable causes of an accident and the final outcome of the accident.
