Abstract
In oil & gas industry, nitrate and nitrite have been used to control Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB). Nitrate and nitrite act thermodynamically as oxidizers, which directly affect corrosion rate of carbon steel. In this study, the effects of nitrate and nitrite on the corrosion behavior of 1Cr carbon steel and 13 Cr stainless steel were investigated. Tests were conducted at atmospheric pressure in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution saturated with CO2 at 40 oC via stationary cylinder electrode. For
nitrate tests, three different concentrations were used (0, 100 and 500ppm). Additionally, three different concentrations of nitrite were tested (0, 50 and 500ppm). Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to study the electrochemical behavior. X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze and identify the morphology and the different phases of the corrosion products. Results showed that both nitrate and nitrite concentration influence the corrosion the 1Cr and 13 Cr steel, however higher concentration of both species showed some corrosion inhibition effects. Both nitrate and nitrite also influenced the composition of the scale formed during corrosion by increasing the iron oxide content.
