    Abstract

A generalized approach to the design of multivibrators based on either one capacitor or one inductor using a perfect amplifier as the nonlinear active element with hysteresis is discussed. A piecewise-linear model of the amplifier is used so that it make sense to investigate the eigenvalues of the Jacobian of the differential equations. The characteristic equations of the circuits are derived. The dynamic nonlinear transfer characteristic of the amplifier is investigated when real operational amplifiers are used. Both relaxation and sinusoidal oscillation may be observed.
