Abstract

Hydroxyapatite, a calcium phosphate compound, is a popular biomaterial due to its biocompatibility, bioactivity, biodegradability and non-toxicity. As strong candidates for interdisciplinary materials science applications, core-shell and hollow-core hydroxyapatite particles have emerged as promising materials with their capability for loading and releasing materials. This literature review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthesis and applications of micro- and nanostructured core-shell and hollow-core hydroxyapatite particles. Their applications in material loading, transfer and controlled release are highlighted and the potential of these particles for use in all disciplines of material transportation is emphasized.
