Abstract

Surface coatings play a vital role in safeguarding and enhancing the aesthetic appearance of various substrates. Coatings are used to shield against external elements like rain, frost, and sunlight that can cause corrosion, deterioration, and eventual malfunction over time. The majority of paint failure occurs due to improper surface preparation or inappropriate application skills, which ultimately reduces the performance of the coatings. Additionally, routine maintenance activities and the use of poor-quality paints also lead to defects in surface coatings. To avoid such defects, it is crucial to pay attention to the entire coating process, from the development stage to the application stage. The present review examines the different types of defects associated with surface coatings, their significant causes, and the remedial measures to prevent them. Prevention of defects enhances the coating's durability and contributes to increasing the life of the substrate on which it is applied.
