Abstract
During the 1960s, the first measurements of charge on dielectric
surfaces using simple electrostatic probes were reported. However
it is only within the last 10 years that a proper understanding of
the probe response has been developed. This situation arose as a
consequence of the earlier studies adopting a purely circuit
theory approach in an attempt to solve a quite complex field
problem. A field problem of this nature can only be addressed
correctly through a field theoretical approach. Such an approach
is discussed in the present paper.
