Abstract
Recent experimental results on Fe and Co clusters in beams yield magnetic moments per atom that are much below the bulk value for these materials. These observations are here explained in terms of a superparamagnetic model from which the true magnetic moment per atom is shown to be enhanced with respect to the bulk value by 10–60%, depending on the cluster size. For Fe clusters the magnetic moment per atom approaches the bulk value for 250-atom clusters.
