Abstract

The inhibiting effect of sugar‐beet chitinase, a defence enzyme in plants, on the growth of the fungi Heterobasidion annosum and Gremmeniella abietina was examined. The enzyme inhibited the growth of H. annosum, but had no effect on G. abietina. The role of hydrolytic enzymes in defence is briefly discussed.
