    Abstract

We observe strong distortion of -150 fs pulses after propagation through a semiconductor optical amplifier. Both pulse narrowing and breakup is seen. The distortion is due to the interplay of the Kerr non-linearity and gain dispersion and is important for the use of SOAs in ultrafast signal processing.
