    Abstract

In this paper we present X-ray and neutron diffraction data illustrating aspects of crystal and magnetic structures of ferromagnetic alpha-Fe and antiferromagnetic NiO nanoparticles, as well as inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic fluctuations in NiO and in canted antiferromagnetic alpha-Fe2O3. In the inelastic case we make use of the fact that we can study both the superparamagnetic relaxation and collective magnetic excitations of the whole particle moment at the antiferromagnetic Bragg positions.
