Abstract
The microstructural refinement by plastic deformation is analysed in terms of key parameters, the spacing between and the misorientation angle across the boundaries subdividing the structure. Coarsening of such structures by annealing is also characterised. For both deformed and annealed structures, good agreement has been found between experimental measurements of the flow stress and calculated values. Commercial purity aluminium is used as an example and deformed by cold rolling and by accumulative roll bonding.
