Abstract
Sintering of magnesia partially stabilized zirconia MZ9 samples, with their surfaces in contact with alumina plates, led to a depletion of the Mg content in the surface layer via a solid state reaction. A destabilized surface is consequently formed and readily transformed to a monoclinic phase during cooling. The formation of such a dense and adherent compressive surface layer leads to strength improvement.
