    Abstract

The stopping power of aluminium for 5-12 MeV protons and deuterons has been measured by a thermometric compensation technique working at liquid helium temperature. The experimental method is described and the standard deviation of the results is found to be 0.3%. In order to obtain this accuracy one has to apply theoretical corrections for the influence of Coulomb scattering, X-rays and deltarays. Other possible corrections are discussed, but are found to be negligible for this combination of projectiles, energies and target material. The results agree with published experimental results as well as with Bichsel's semiempirical tables (1963).
