    Abstract

Within the framework of a general perturbation method chapters 2-4 outline the asymptotic properties of elastic, conservative systems in the vicinity of points of bifurcation.

Chapters 5 and 6 treat specific construction elements. Chapter 5 deals with the stability and postbuckling characteristics of the axially compressed plate strip, which constitutes a vital part of the thin-walled box column treated in the last chapter. Chapter 6 demonstrates the relationship between local and global stability phenomena and suggests a simple design formula for thin-walled box columns and similar structures.
