Abstract

This paper introduces an innovative method for identifying the maximum delay margin (MDM) for the networked control of the excitation system in synchronous generators. The methodology is on the basis of frequency domain analysis, transforming the characteristic equation into a nonlinear one. The spectral radius is applied as a criterion to identify the marginal frequencies when the eigenvalues intersect the imaginary axis, and the marginal frequencies can be computed by solving nonlinear equations. The exciter control system for a synchronous generator is formulated as a time delay problem. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by comparing it with the latest reported methods and through time-domain simulations. The technique’s novelty and superiority are evident in its reduced conservatism and computational requirements.
