Simulation of non-stationary differential support motions accounting for varying soil conditions

Abstract

This paper presents a method for simulation of spatially varying ground motions by incorporat-ing the effects of incoherence, wave passage and varying soil conditions. Two different approaches are consi-dered: In the first, the simulated motions are consistent with the power spectral density of a given acelerogram and are characterized by uniform variability at all locations. In the second, the simulated motions are condi-tioned on an observed record and exhibit increasing variance with distance from the site of the observation. For both approaches, example simulated motions are presented for an existing bridge model. The method is validated by comparing statistical characteristics of the simulations with the target theoretical models. Re-sponse spectra of the simulated motions at each support are also examined.
