Abstract
We discuss electromagnetic fields and optical forces acting on microspheres made
of extremely anisotropic medium. We propose an energy-based criterion for choosing an appro-
priate solution of Maxwell’s equations inside the sphere when two solutions are singular at the
center. We investigate the material parameters of a lossy hyperbolic-metamaterial sphere that
can be pulled by a nonparaxial, gradientless Bessel beam.
