    Abstract

The objective of the present investigation is to calculate the response of a Bonus Kombi 320 kW mk II turbine at extreme wind condition, which corresponds to what can be experienced during a cyclone. Several wind turbines experienced a cyclone in the Gujarat region in India in June 1998 and the aim of the present investigation is to support the investigation of possible failure modes of the turbines.
The calculation and results can be divided in two parts. In the first part, the stand still shaft torque (starting moment) is estimated at different wind speeds and wind directions. In the second part, the free wheeling rotational speed and tip deflection are estimated at different wind speeds.
