Reconfigurable Converter with Multiple-Voltage Multiple-Power for E-Mobility Charging

This paper presents a reconfigurable power electronic converter that is able to produce multiple output voltages and multiple output powers to cater for the growing demand of electrified mobility (e-mobility) apparatus. The proposed converter aims to accommodate different charging needs for different e-mobility apparatus, unlike the existing charging infrastructure where it has been designed for a specific type and can only charge one equipment at a time. The proposed charger utilizes the well-known four-leg three-phase converter, three single-phase medium frequency transformers with multiple secondary windings and Active Front-End (AFE) bidirectional PWM rectifier modules. While the high frequency ac enables a compact system, with smaller passive components; the four-leg converter accommodates the potential unbalance caused by simultaneously charging different e-mobility apparatus. The proposed charging system also enables vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operation if required. The feasibility of the proposed reconfigurable power electronic converter is confirmed by intensive simulation studies for different charging scenarios.
