Propagation of Density Perturbations in a Collisionless Q-Machine Plasma

    The evelution of the ion velocity distribution function is calculated by means of the linearized Vlasov equation for the case where the initial perturbation consists of a steplike density discontinuity. Some characteristic features in the solution are caused by wave-particle interaction. These features are found experimentally by perturbing the plasma in a single-ended Q machine by means of a grid immersed in the plasma column. The perturbed ion distribution function is measured with an electrostatic energy analyzer.
