    Abstract

Process optimization of Al/SiC metal matrix composites is described through a wet blending technique that effectively disperses SiC whiskers in an aluminum matrix. Whisker dispersion and protection are aided by a sol-gel interphase applied to the whiskers prior to matrix blending. Following the blending and PM processing, i.e. compaction and extrusion, the composite is examined by SEM. Improved thermal properties have been achieved as a result of the sol-gel interphase and are verified by DTA and SEM studies. The mechanical properties, including fracture surface examination, of the Al/SiC composites are tested for wet blended samples containing either coated or uncoated whiskers. Additionally, the results of this study are compared to similar Al-SiC composites processes by standard dry blending procedures.
