Abstract
This article presents a critical review on process synthesis, design, and control of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which remains as an important task for researchers and design engineers working in the field. The motivations for and the challenges remaining in process synthesis, design, and control of WWTPs are firstly identified. The commonly used approaches for process synthesis, design, and control are then introduced with regards to their applicability to wastewater treatment. To illustrate the frameworks for process synthesis, design, and control, two literature reported studies are used as examples. Applications of process synthesis, design, and control at WWTPs are summarized and discussed. To conclude the chapter, perspectives on process synthesis, design, and control of WWTPs are presented.
