Abstract

As the development of the NewAthena x-ray observatory continues to progress towards mission adoption, refinement of the x-ray reflective mirror coatings remains critical to ensure telescope optics performance. While previous studies have demonstrated suitability of iridium and carbon coatings, platinum is now being explored as a potential alternative due to scarcity of iridium. This however requires a reassessment of coating design and experimental validation. We present optimisations of platinum and carbon thin films, investigating options for multilayer designs to meet the NewAthena effective area requirements. Relevant coating designs are produced and characterised with emphasis on x-ray performance and stability to wet-chemical treatment.
