Abstract
Measurement techniques based on direct material bulk response for State-of-Charge (SoC) determination of thermal energy storage (TES) are needed to enhance the storage controllability in flexible energy systems. The ideal TES SoC technique measures instantaneously and globally and is applicable for TES spanning kWh-MWh. SoC is therefore defined as a component level property – analogous to electrical batteries. The combined IEA Energy Storage (ES) Task 47/Solar Heating & Cooling (SHC) Task 74 addresses R&D gaps in SoC, expanding the existing body of knowledge to include sensible TES and applications of machine learning/AI.
