Abstract
In this paper, a physical pendulum with a horizontal axis is investigated, when the axis is forced to move perpendicular to itself. Tests are carried out, and the test results have been used as a guide to the theoretical treatment of the problem.
When the movement of the axis is vertical, it is possible to obtain conditions, where the pendulum is stable in an inverted position. As it is shown in section 3, there is good agreement between the theory and the test results.
When the axis moves horizontally, the tests indicate that under certain circumstances the pendulum is stable when vibrating about inclined positions, and under other conditions it will be stable about the vertical position. It is shown in section 4, that there seems to be a reasonable agreement between the test results and the theory in this case, too.
