Abstract
Alpha Smooth Muscle Actin (a-SMA)
is upregulated together with extracellular matrix (ECM) during
activation of Hepatic Stellate Cells (HSCs) in fibrosis. Histone
deacetylase (HDAC) remove acetylations and regulate the
expression of genes, which is associated with cancers. There is a
close relationship between cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma
(HCC), and markers enabling identification of patients in risk of
developing HCC with cirrhosis is a major unmet clinical need. We
developed an ELISA for the assessment of acetylated a-SMA (Aca-
SMA) in serum. The objective was to investigate the ability of
this marker to non-invasively diagnose hepatic fibrosis and assess
the influence of HDAC in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
