    Abstract

The Marine Board of the National Research Council (NRC) has initiated a new study on evaluating alterntive Tanker designs to double hull tankers. This effort was mandated by the US Congress in the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1998. The purpose of the study is to develop a methodology for evaluation of the oil outlfow performance of alternative tanker designs in the event of a collision or grounding. The present paper is an invited contribution oto the first meeting of the Committee on Evaluating Double Hull Alterntive Tanker Designs held at the National Academy of Sciences' Georgetown facilities in Washington DC.
