Abstract

Avedoere Wastewater Services (AWS) has implemented STAR advanced online control in order to increase both the hydraulic capacity and the organic, N and P treatment capacity of the 350,000 p.e. wastewater treatment plant., STAR has also been used for online estimation of nitrification and denitrification rates and such estimation in an alternating wastewater treatment plant is discussed in this paper. The nitrification rates are estimated based on continuous measurements of ammonia and nitrate. This information could be useful in various ways: for early warning to prevent severe disturbances such as nitrification inhibition; for optimising phase lengths and distribution of the phases in the alternating operation.
