Abstract
Based on the WDK-school's design theory we try to make a balance
on product structuring with respect to functional and behavioural
product synthesis, the structuring of a product into units,
modules, and reusable products, and the definition of a product
family, which might be configured into products without any
additional design effort. Asustainable theoretical foundation with
articulated laws is presented. The theoretical foundation has only
had a limited impact on the recent years research contributions,
but its importance is growing. The article contribute to a
detailed language within the area of product structuring, which
clarifies the imprecise use of terminology in industrial practise.
