Abstract
We study the accuracy of the lowest-order bending theory of
shells, derived from an asymptotic expansion of the
three-dimensional theory of elasticity, by comparing the results
of this shell theory for a cylindrical shell with clamped ends
with the results of a solution to the three-dimensional problem.
The results are also compared with those of some commonly used
engineering shell theories.
